I think that BBQ, at least for me is about the taste you have at the moment. For example, I go to the County Line every year for my birthday. I show up with about 20+ friends and family. We have a great time and mostly eat the Country Style All You Can Eat with Beef Ribs, Brisket and Sausage. We have been doing this for over a decade. Everyone loves the Beef Ribs. Hell, even the vegetarian have to smell them and live with their life decisions.

Today, I am meeting with my business partner at Rib Kings for lunch. We get the chopped beef lunch special. It's good food at a great price. They recently changed their beans and that has made me upset, but it is still good food.

I live in Austin, so these are Austin places I am talking about.

Best chopped beef sandwich I have ever had in my life was back home in Tyler. Pat Gee's BBQ. It is a little shack out in the country that looks like it might not be able to pass a health inspection. But I tell you what. No one cares. All shapes, sizes, colors, etc. go to Pat's for some good BBQ. Get the combo meat sandwich for a little different flavor that will light your lips and tongue up with flavor. It's a chopped beef and sausage sandwich. Heaven in your mouth. I tried it against my will when my brother suggested it. I never regretted the decision after taking a bite. Oh. My. God. Good luck finding it though. Not sure Google has been out that way.Here is a link to a review one guy made on it. http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/tt/e4a3/

Top 4 (because just picking one is impossible):

Louie Mueller's in Taylor;

Cooper's in Llano;

Smitty's in Lockhart;

Salt Lick in Driftwood.

@ Russel: I haven't been to any of those, but I plan to.
@ Amber: I love Rudy's too. Sometimes I prefer to get my spicey BBQ on.

Anyone like Iron Works on Cesar Chavez in Austin?

Mike: Iron Works didn't fare well on Man Up's official visit (http://manuptexasbbq.blogspot.com/2008/10/saturday-october-11-2008-iron-works.html), but Jason had a good experience another time (http://manuptexasbbq.blogspot.com/2008/10/jason-previews-iron-works-barbecue.html).

Shoepf's

I've grown up on their grub- And, their chicken is tender and juicy, no where else does chicken this good, and sometimes I need a healthier white meat option. Also, after a certain level of quality (as far as BBQ goes)- everyone's brisket tastes delicious- but what really can set a BBQ joint apart is how well they can do white meat...

I also like Shoepf's sauce and cornbread... and the fact that they have the 'pppfff' sound in their name, which is the same sound my hiney makes after I eat BBQ.

Never done Louie Mueller's, so I'll have to say:

1. Salt Lick
2. Schoepfs
3. Snows
4. Coopers

Wish my list were longer, but I don't get out much.

Louie Muellers-Excellent food, great ambiance.

#1 REASON- that sweet little nugget of brisket they put on your tray while you are ordering. That is heaven and you know life is about to get a lot better.

Also love Sam's BBQ on the east side of austin. Great sausage and sauce. Open late night, just incase you need something to soke up your late night drinking.
